Meet the newest member of our Carrick clan, Henry James.

I opted to take my own newborn photos as we hired Robin Long Photography to do more of a family session when Henry was just 2 weeks old. Take a peek around her site and you’ll see several images of Henry and I together during that session in Salem, OR.
If you’re a photographer, you’ve heard it’s well worth it to hire someone else to do your newborn photos. I can tell you with certainty this is absolutely true! I had a much harder recovery this 3rd time around and found it much, much harder to take Henry’s newborn portraits then I was expecting. I spaced it out over several weeks and still have about 1,000 images to go through that I haven’t even touched. I was just so tired! I knew it was most important to at least take the photos as I’d get to editing them at some point – though now it’s be an entire year and I still haven’t touched them!
This newborn bird nest shot took me several tries before I could get him to cooperate. Henry did NOT like any of my wool fluff. I finally got this shot when he was over 3 weeks old!! I do NOT recommend waiting to have newborn images done this late as just minutes before this shot Henry was screaming and wailing and my mom told me I’d never get the shot. I proceeded to wrap him in two stretchy wraps and he finally settled down long enough to doze a bit while I took this overhead shot.
I LOVE baby on black shots! I have a similar image from my daughter when she was just 5 days old and feel these black and white images are absolutely timeless. Prop shots like the bird nest above are cute, but I think they will definitely date an image in 5 years. This is just true, curly baby goodness.
